We should recognize the freedom of human beings to adhere to one religion or another or to none and be a secularist. But neither religion nor secularism should claim scientific sanctions.
A government has no right to promote secularism as an ideology. The separation of state and religion must apply also to secularism, since it functions as a religion and is not based on any consensus in the scientific community.
The implication of this point is that the state has no right to demand from me a commitment to a so-called 'secular' state. Whether one holds a secular view or a religious view of reality is not for the state to decide.
In place of the so-called Secular State, I prefer to speak of a Pluralistic State, if we want to avoid the idea of a Hindu State, Islamic State, etc.
A Pluralistic State is one in which people of religions and of no religion (secularists) can be commonly committed to a single nation and its national goals and purposes, as adumbrated in the Constitution and in democratic parliamentary decisions and enactments.
Communal harmony, respect for other religions or no religion and the willingness of all regional, linguistic or communal groups to subordinate their interests to the larger just interests of the nation, would form part of the commitment of every citizen in a Pluralistic State.

ഒന്ന് അല്ലെങ്കിൽ മറ്റൊരു മതത്തിൽ ഉറച്ചുനിൽക്കാനോ ഒന്നിനോടും ചേർന്നു പോകാതിരിക്കാനോ ഉള്ള മനുഷ്യ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം നാം അംഗീകരിക്കണം. എന്നാൽ മതമോ മതേതരത്വമോ, ശാസ്ത്രീയമായ അംഗീകരണം അവകാശപ്പെടരുത്.
മതനിരപേക്ഷത ദർശനമായി വളർത്തുവാൻ ഒരു സർക്കാരിനും അധികാരമില്ല. ശാസ്ത്ര വിഭാഗത്തിലെ ഏതെങ്കിലും ഒരു സമവായത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനമില്ലാതെ, കേവലം ഒരു മതമായി പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നിടത്തോളം, രാഷ്ട്രവും മതവും തമ്മിലുള്ള വേർതിരിവ് മതേതരത്വത്തിനും ബാധകമാകണം.
ഒരുവന് മതേതര വീക്ഷണമോ സത്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള മതപരമായ വീക്ഷണമോ ഉണ്ടോ എന്ന് തീരുമാനിക്കേണ്ടത് സംസ്ഥാനമല്ല. ഇതിന്റെ അർത്ഥം 'മതേതര' രാഷ്ട്രം എന്ന് വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്നതിനോട് ഒരുവനിൽ നിന്നു പ്രതിബദ്ധത ആവശ്യപ്പെടാൻ രാഷ്ട്രത്തിന് അവകാശമില്ല എന്നതാണ്.
ഒരു ഹിന്ദു രാഷ്ട്രം, ഇസ്ലാമിക് രാഷ്ട്രം തുടങ്ങിയ ആശയങ്ങൾ ഒഴിവാക്കാൻ ഞാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നുവെങ്കിൽ, മതേതര രാഷ്ട്രം എന്ന് വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്നതിനു പകരം, ഒരു ബഹുസ്വര രാഷ്ട്രത്തെ കുറിച്ച് സംസാരിക്കാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു.
ഭരണഘടനയിലും ജനാധിപത്യ പാർലമെന്ററി തീരുമാനങ്ങളിലും നിയമനിർമ്മാണങ്ങളിലും രൂപരേഖ ആക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നതു പോലെ, മതങ്ങളുടെയും മത രാഹിത്യത്തിന്റെയും (മതേതരവാദികൾ) ആളുകൾക്ക്, ഒരു രാഷ്ട്രത്തിനും അതിന്റെ ദേശീയ ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങൾക്കും ഉദ്ദേശ്യങ്ങൾക്കും പൊതുവായി പ്രതിജ്ഞാബദ്ധരാകാൻ കഴിയുന്ന ഒന്നാണ്, ബഹുസ്വര രാഷ്ട്രം.
ഒരു ബഹുസ്വര രാഷ്ട്രത്തിലെ ഓരോ പൗരന്റെയും പ്രതിബദ്ധതയുടെ ഭാഗമായി സാമുദായിക ഐക്യം, മറ്റ് മതങ്ങളോടുള്ള ബഹുമാനം അല്ലെങ്കിൽ മതമില്ലാതിരിക്കുക, എല്ലാ പ്രാദേശിക, ഭാഷാ, സാമുദായിക വിഭാഗങ്ങളുടെയും താൽപ്പര്യങ്ങൾ രാഷ്ട്രത്തിന്റെ നീതിപൂർവകമായ വലിയ താൽപ്പര്യങ്ങൾക്ക് കീഴ്പ്പെടുത്താനുള്ള സന്നദ്ധത എന്നിവ ഉണ്ടാകണം.
